Deshon Competes at Collegiate MTB National Championships
Taking a lightweight crew, Coach Harris Wagner and Eliza Deshon flew first to Albuquerque, NM. Where they started their journey to Purgatory Ski Resort, located to the north of Durango, CO. The aspen trees were showing their brilliant yellow fall colors on the rocky slopes of the San Juan mountains, and weather conditions remained crisp, dry and warm during the day. Thursday kicked off the events with the cross country (XC) course open for pre-riding. The track proved to be an immense climb with over 1000' of elevation gained per lap. Eliza had to ride strategically to perform in the high elevation, with the base of Purgatory being 8,793' above sea level and the top being 10,822'. Even through the thin air and the dust Eliza was able to perform well in her race on Friday finishing in 44th place in front of some of her usual competitors in the SECCC conference.
Saturday brought about the short track (STXC) which included a much-anticipated metal stair descent. With a couple of practice laps under Eliza's belt and feeling confident she, Harris and mechanic Jack Johnson rode local trails in Overend Park in Durango to warm up. With a fun warm up done they headed back to Purgatory for the race. The start was voraciously quick, and the pace didn't let up for the entire race. Eliza managed to hang onto 49th place. Not being sufficiently tired the trio headed out again for yet another ride, eager to soak in all that the San Juans have to offer and to tick off the bucket list item of riding through a golden aspen forest. That night after a full few days of racing and riding they packed their bikes in preparation for their journey back to Warren Wilson College.
With such an excellent trip under their belts they are already looking forward to next years national championship event. Thanks to USA Cycling and Purgatory Ski Resort for putting on a great race.
