About

The Echo student-run newspaper was first published in 1942, just a short time after Warren Wilson Vocational Junior College began admitting women. The publication was renamed The Talon in 1976 and later renamed the Common Tongue in 1989. In early 2000, it reverted back to The Echo until December 2016, when the College decided to stop running it due to a lack of funding. On November 16, 2020, a new chapter of The Echo begins.

We strive to remain true to the facts, to our community’s ideals and to our mission.
We believe that our mission is to:

  • Inform the community of current news and events in a manner that is timely, fair, professional and factual

  • Facilitate a variety of voices and perspectives to strive for inclusivity

  • Craft our writing, videos and photos with awareness, intention and respect for diversity

  • Aim to localize global stories that impact our community and our world

  • Promote dialogue between The Echo and the Warren Wilson College community to better serve our readership

  • Constantly pursue greater education in journalism and media literacy

Decency Policy

The Echo newspaper understands the changing concepts of decency in our world. The connotations of language shift over time. However, we aim to avoid profanities, obscenities and lewd language unless essential to a story. To expand, if changing the language in a story causes a loss in meaning, then the editorial board will use their discretion in allowing obscenities on a case-by-case basis.
