WWC Fall Sports Recap

Maya Bartleson | November 1, 2023

Warren Wilson College’s (WWC) fall sports teams are wrapping up their exciting seasons this week — here’s a recap of the Owl’s success throughout the past few months.

Men’s soccer ended their season 0-14, but their record does not reflect the team’s performance. Offensively, the team scored 11 total goals, with Will Feehan leading the team with 5 total goals for the season. WWC’s goalkeepers defended the net with 97 total saves. Overall, the team is looking forward to redemption for the 2024 season!

The women's soccer team finished their season with a 0-13-1 record. The team played through many adversities, but still fought hard every game. The team had a total of 4 goals, but its defense shined through. WWC’s goalkeepers had a combined 164 saves, with Callie Aerni leading the team with 87 total saves.

This fall, women’s volleyball had their first-ever season and is currently sitting at 2-20 with their last game against Montreat on Nov. 2, 2023. The team’s energy was contagious, and it was reflected in the statistics. KJ Helinky led the team with 265 kills and leads the conference with an average of 3.94 kills per set. Defensively, the team is led by Lillian DeMeglio, the libero, with 294 digs and Vera Pondolfo, with a team high of 23 blocks. With an impressive inaugural season, WWC is excited to see what the future of this program has in store!

WWC welcomed another new team to their NCAA program: rugby. Rugby is currently sitting at 4-14, leading WWC’s fall sports in wins. They will celebrate senior night and their last games of the season on Sunday, Nov. 5. Be sure to come support seniors Hayden Drescher, Leigha Nix, Blue Savedge and of course, Drescher’s dog Bella, also known as Chicken Nugget.

WWC’s cycling team had a dominant season in the Southeastern Cycling Conference. The team showed grit and success, making it all the way to the National Tournament. We are excited to see their continued success next season!

WWC’s cross country teams both displayed dedication and hard work in their 2023 season with five total races. Since starting in August, they set lifelong personal bests and competed against several top-seeded teams, including Division II teams. WWC hosted its own Fall Harvest 5k this October. We look forward to seeing the team grow in the 2024 season!
