Procrastibaking: Coraline Cookies

Lindsey Botkin | October 25, 2023

Welcome back to procrastibaking! If you are a holiday enthusiast like me, Halloween slashers, thrillers, and other movies are binge-worthy necessities in the weeks leading up to this spooky time of year. As we turn the halfway point in the semester, I can tell my procrastination skills are getting sharper. Instead of writing some papers that are due in the near future, I am baking pumpkin snickerdoodles.

While these snickerdoodles may be festive enough on their own with their faint flavor of pumpkin pairing nicely with the cinnamon sugar coating, I have a couple tricks up my sleeve to take it to the next level.

The recipe I used for these cookies was from In Bloom Bakery. This is not the first recipe that I have used from their website, and I doubt it will be the last. All of their recipes are easy to follow and always yield more than satisfactory results. These snickerdoodles are one of the easiest recipes if you are in a rush or craving a sweet treat to accompany your favorite fall films.

As I followed the recipe I wanted to add something that would make the cookies feel more like a Halloween treat rather than just a cozy fall dessert. I decided to shape the cookies into buttons paying homage to the movie Coraline.

Of course with a snickerdoodle dough you cannot use a cookie cutter to get your ideal shape. Instead, I used the bottom of a measuring cup and a set of chopsticks to form the cookies into button shapes. It was simple, really: after you place the cookies in the oven, set the timer for two minutes less than what the recipe says. When your timer goes off, pull the cookie pan out of the oven. Take your measuring cup (mine was the ¼ cup measurement), and press the bottom gently into the top of the snickerdoodle. Once you have a circular imprint on the cookie take one of the chopsticks and push it into the cookie to make the button holes. Remember to not press the chopstick all the way through the cookie, just enough to make the button shape identifiable. I’d recommend putting the cookies back in the oven for a few more minutes after to ensure that they are cooked all the way through.

Overall I would recommend these cookies if you are searching for a quick and easy way to add a fun and creative twist to a simple fall recipe. They are perfect for any halloween movie marathon or if you are looking for a way to bring the spooky spirit to the kitchen.
