During the fall semester of 2021, The Echo, student newspaper of Warren Wilson College (WWC), held their crew meetings in a conference room on the bottom floor of Jensen. This semester, The Echo and its host of new members moved into the old Environmental Justice Crew space.

The new crew space on the bottom floor of Vining A, next to the laundry room, was originally found by first-year and photojournalist Quinn Bonney. He had not been looking for the room, but had been looking for a Crew space.

“I remember coming down here with a friend to do laundry, because we’re right next to the laundry, and I just peered through the window wondering what was down here,” Bonney said. “I saw that … can’t remember what crew this was Environmental Justice Crew, and I didn’t think that crew was around anymore so I asked around. That crew had been gone for a long time, yet that crew space was still here.”

The space sat in decay with no crew putting it to use. Bug carcasses and abandoned material were cleaned out in the transition, and The Echo was left with a blank canvas to make their own.

The only task left was to furnish the space and Sierra Davis, assistant editor and senior on The Echo Crew, talked about reaching out to the SGA for a grant for this purpose.

“SGA gives out grants to clubs and crews. We asked them for a grant for some money to get new furnishing because if you’ve been into the crew space you’ve seen what it is down there,” said Davis. “Though there was tables and chairs, there was not enough chairs. We currently don’t have enough chairs for everyone to have a seat comfortably.”

Not only is furniture needed in the new crew space. Things that would make The Echo Crew space more like a newsroom according to Davis are books on media law, AP style and media literacy. As well as getting necessities for the room, the crew is optimistic about making the space more homey.
