January Planetary Transitions

Starting out the new year is a new moon peaking in Capricorn on January 2 at 1:33 PM. On January 17, the full moon will blossom into Cancer at 6:48 PM. The full moon will bring a sense of attachment and compassion towards loved ones. Be weary of holding on to things that should be let go of.

Another movement to open the new year is Mercury moving into Aquarius also on January 2 at 2:09 AM. Mercury is the planet of communication, and Aquarius that of independence and originality. Let words be spoken honestly and in their truest form. However, Aquarius have a tendency to restrain their emotions and vulnerable side. Speaking the truth should never remove emotionality.

Only twelve days later, Mercury will begin its first retrograde (RX) of the year on January 14 at 6:41 AM. Being the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury has the fastest orbit and RXs most out of all the planets. An RX can cast a shadow on certain aspects of our lives, while other times causing focused energy. Use this RX to focus your communicative efforts on being as original, creative and rational as possible.

As can happen during RX, because it appears that a planet is moving backward, Mercury will briefly re-enter Capricorn during this RX. It will only occur for a few weeks, so allow the visitation in Capricorn to provide any additional self assurance and independent energy that you may need.

Venus will end its RX and “go direct” on January 29 at 3:46 PM. This direct will occur in Capricorn. While Capricorn may not be the most romantic of the signs, this will be a perfect time to cozy up to someone warm and endure the cold weather with company.

Also in Capricorn come late January will be Mars. Entering the sign on January 24 at 7:53 AM, fiery Mars will come in contact with the grounding and driven nature of Capricorn. These two make a dynamic duo. The planet measures drive, passion and aggression while the zodiac is calm yet assertive and very determined. Creative projects and impulsive decisions will likely become positive experiences for the creator.

More direct energy flows from Uranus, ending its long RX in Taurus on January 18 at 10:25 AM. Uranus is known as the “Awakener” and is the planet of surprises. The refocusing of Uranus’ soul rocking energy in Taurus will bring certain things to light. It may change the way we connect with the Earth and others around us. Because Uranus is a generational planet, its change is not seen on a daily scale. To measure its effects, we often reflect on past cycles.

Uranus was last in Taurus from 1934 to 1942, the years where the US experienced the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, and became involved in World War II. However, at the end of this cycle, the United States was in much better shape than where it started.

Whatever Uranus in Taurus brings to the world between now and 2026, it is clear that we are along for the ride and will come to see great shifts in our lives by that point.

The world out there is frightening and changes fast. Join me for this year’s astrological journey to maintain some sense of footing — however mythical or metaphorical it may be.
