Carrigan Causby’s Capstone Project

Rae Milstead | March 16, 2023

Carrigan Causby is a graduating senior of the class of 2023 and is graduating with a degree in integrative studies.

Causby has been a valuable member of the Warren Wilson College (WWC) campus, as a member of the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. In her free time, Causby loves to hike, cook, kayak, read and spend time with family and friends.

Causby’s thesis aimed to perform a pilot project to see if there was a tie between redlining, particulate matter 2.5 and asthma in Asheville N.C. Causby hypothesized that there would be a correlation between redlining and higher levels of particulate matter 2.5 as her research showed that other cities had similar results. Causby hopes to use her experiences with this thesis, along with her time at WWC to matriculate into medical school this coming fall.

Causby decided to pursue this project because public health is so universal. Causby touched on the importance of health issues and how people in redlined areas suffer more health issues than those not in those areas.

“I think if we as a society can really start focusing on that [how redlining affects people in the context of health issues], it could change healthcare,” Causby said,

Public health is something that Causby is very passionate about and she wants to focus on social issues. Once graduating, she plans on applying those passions when practicing medicine.
