Three Books for Three Months of Winter… and One for Good Luck

Becca Boynton | November 15, 2023

Winter is coming! The time for thick gloves, thick coats and thick books. In case you already exhausted the books you brought to campus, here are four books to devour while drowning in the fuzziest blanket you can find.

The books will be rated by the very professional and sought-after snowflake rating. The more snowflakes, the better the book.

“Eileen”: Otessa Moshfegh

Set during the miserable winter of an unnamable town in Massachusetts, this story is perfect for nights in. As someone who exclusively reads books about slightly unhinged women, this is a classic.

Snowflake rating: Three snowflakes out of five.

“Carmilla”: Sheridan Le Fanu

One of the oldest works of vampire literature, if you grew up a little too obsessed with Kristen Stewart, this is the perfect book for you. There are vampires, lesbians and a not-so-happy ending. For anybody who spends the entirety of a novel guessing the ending, only to be disappointed by being correct the entire time, this is the read for you.

Snowflake rating: Four snowflakes out of five.

Chronicles of Bob Dylan”

I like the think of Bob Dylan as the image of a brutal winter; the jackets with both hands in the pockets at all times and the cloud of smoke above his head that could be stagnant cold air or cigarette smoke.  His music and life are something to fond over and what better time to do so than the coldest time of the year? This is an easy read, one you can finish in just a few hours if you are dedicated.

Snowflake rating: Five snowflakes out of five.

“The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath”

Another person who I believe embodies the red-nosed, dark and hellish months of winter is Sylvia Plath. While this may be some of the saddest journal entries you will ever read, next to your diary from seventh grade, it is also so grotesque and profound it is hard to put down. The thickest book of the list, this book can be torn apart in just a few months.

Snowflake rating: Three snowflakes out of five.

While there have to be thousands of books perfect for days spent inside, these were just a few of my favorites.
