Fruits and Wolves Celebrates Tu BiShvat at Warren Wilson College
Roan Church | January 31, 2024
People say on the full moon werewolves transform from humans to their beast-like forms, and this full moon was no different. The Fruits and Wolves party celebrates the wolf moon, the moon phase that happens once a year, and fruits which are in celebration of Tu BiShvat which is the Jewish New Year for trees. So if you weren't expecting to see so many people dressed as wolves and strawberries then you were in for a treat.
The event, which took place in the Herb Cabin on Friday, January 26th was a social event for Warren Wilson students that allowed for connection and celebration for a new year and a new moon. Sophia Acocella, the main director of the whole event talked about The Garden's role in the community and how it “hopes to emphasize its role on campus as a community space and was overjoyed by the enthusiasm shown about this party.” Tu BiShvat and the Wolf Moon fell on the same day this year and was a great way to bring people together through a theme that suited both.
Tu BiShvat, the Jewish New Year for trees, occurs on the 15th day of the Shvat month in the Jewish calendar, which happened to land perfectly to include in the celebration of the party this year. Acocella pointed out the importance of connection through holidays and cultural events and how “bringing awareness and excitement to different holidays and cultural traditions like the full moon or Tu BiShva… people would be encouraged to express themselves in new ways, search out new information or just talk to someone they had not before.”
From gray wolves to cherries this was a Warren Wilson night to remember and allowed for great connections and a recognition of the year ahead the winter we are in and how it will pass. Laughter was shared and friends were met and made. A full moon and a new year.
