Thrift Stores in Asheville: Which Ones Are Worth It?
Becca Boynton | February 1, 2024
Some might say we live in a beautiful hub of thrift and antique stores. While Asheville is no New York, a mass of used goods is waiting to be picked up by the next person.
With so many thrift stores to choose from, which is worth it?
Sweeten Creek Antiques and Collectibles
Located just a twelve-minute drive from Downtown Asheville, Sweeten Creek Antiques is a large warehouse full to the brim with clothes and porcelain goods. Bring a jacket, as the inside tends to be a bit colder than the already brisk outside. The warehouse is divided into separate vendors ranging from vintage books to Harley Davidson leather jackets. As well, the very back of the store includes a clothing vendor who decided to decorate their booth with mannequins — a lot of them. Warning: the models are lifelike and creepily still, but the clothes are good.
Mountain Home Thrift Store: Cheryl’s Place
A classic in Black Mountain and Swannanoa. Simply turn right from Kittredge or left from the Chapel and drive straight until you reach the Western Correctional Center for Women, it is very hard to miss. Right across from that sits Cheryl’s Place. If you have the time to search, some of the best pieces of clothing are hidden within the racks.
Kiwanis Thrift Shop
Along the long strip of gas stations, small businesses and neighborhood openings on U.S Highway 70, right before you drive into downtown Black Mountain, sits a small but generous thrift shop. You may have to dig a bit more (and fight to find a spot on the rack) but with such cheap prices, anything is worth the two dollars.
Bittersweet Antiques
If you have ever driven on I-40 and seen a large billboard with ‘ANTIQUES” boldly written in red, the arrows are leading you to this shop. One of the smaller antique stores in our area, it still has a variety of things to choose from. If you have less time in the day to go frolicking around Asheville in large, cold warehouses, this is the perfect place for you. While the clothing selection is short, you can find delicate knick knacks or old vinyls in any of the numerous booths.
