Spend The Day in Black Mountain: Four Free Experiences

Becca Boynton | February 8, 2024

Black Mountain is just a 15-minute drive from the long stretch of land that Warren Wilson College sits on. While downtown Black Mountain is quaint, there are still many places worth exploring whenever you have a free day and crave adventure.

Montreal Conference Center

While not directly downtown, the Montreal Conference Center is just a quick drive from central Black Mountain.

Upon entering Montreat College you will find the picturesque Lake Susan. With a plethora of lush trees and the roaring sounds of water, this is the perfect outdoor spot to go for a walk or enjoy the countryside.

If you crave further adventure, there are two stores to put on your list, alongside a cute, simple café that serves coffee, ice cream and more.

White Horse Black Mountain

Truly a staple in Black Mountain, enjoy a free show at White Horse Black Mountain on designated days. For a nighttime activity or middle-of-the-day trip, you can surely relax while watching an artistic experience rare to find outside of these mountains.

Key City Antiques

Perusing antique stores is the perfect way to spend a day. Much like a museum, they contain pieces from all over with their own unique stories.

Key City Antiques is in the heart of Black Mountain, directly beside the renowned town of White Horse, Black Mountain. Inside, there are two separate upstairs sections filled with antiques, books and vintage clothing.

There are also a handful of small businesses selling their handmade goods. If you do not wish to spend any money, simply strolling through the old streets and window shopping is just as entertaining.

Seven Sisters Gallery

Another store much like a museum, the Seven Sisters Gallery contains handmade works of art made by local artisans. Each piece is delicate and unique — from wood pieces to handcrafted jewelry, this gallery contains it all.

There are a myriad of excellent ways to spend your free afternoon in Black Mountain, whether or not you have the budget to splurge. From antique shops to galleries to performing art centers, there is never a dull moment when you are in the heart of the city. See for yourself and check out these four places!
