The BSU Revival & Upcoming Events

This Sunday a new Black Student Union (BSU) Instagram was created with the hopes of reviving the presence of a BSU at Warren Wilson College (WWC). First year Lois Akundo shares her plans for the club as well as upcoming events that they have helped organize or are organizing.

The soonest of the events will be the Valentine’s Day party, happening Tuesday the 14th. This event is being planned by several affinity clubs on campus.

“This event is a Valentine's themed party so people dress up,” Akundo said. “So we have the Asian Cultural Club, the Latinx Club and the Black Student Union and we're going to show how we show love in our different cultures. It was also kind of based on a day of love, come with your friends, and enjoy this activity such as speed dating, kissing booth or a raffle for sex toys.”

Later this month the BSU is also planning a movie showing. The movie night has a set date and a BSU cookout is in the works as well.

“We also have a movie coming up on the 17th of February, which is for Black History Month. The autobiography of Malcolm X. During the movie, popcorn, snacks. And the movie is supposed to be in Kittredge,” Akundo said. “And then we're having a cookout sometime this month for Black History Month. And people dress up as historians they felt really moved by and come to this cookout, Share our stories.”

They are also planning to host a fashion show in the fall.

Akundo wishes to grow the BSU on WWC and eventually work with BSU’s on other campuses such as Montreat College and UNCA. That is the goal and in the meantime, she shares her experience that led her to kickstart the new BSU with hopes of a resurgence.

“My past few months, especially as an international student, was really hard for me to fit into the community. I was depressed,” Akundo said. “So I'm hoping that this BSU club can grow with us and incoming freshmen next year in the fall, or in upcoming years, are excited about everything and willing to go, ‘I have a place at this school. Let me join. I can attend the school because I have a place.’”

If you wish to support the BSU, you can follow and direct message the Instagram account or by emailing.
