Warren Wilson College Inside Out Program Upcoming Spring Courses

Becca Boynton | October 25, 2023

Warren Wilson College (WWC) is currently opening applications for students interested in participating in the Inside Out program for the upcoming Spring 2024 semester. With registration starting just next week, now is the time to get your application in and gain exposure to a rare and irregular classroom environment.

WWC is currently the only college in North Carolina offering the Inside Out program. Inside Out is an international prison exchange program that seeks to provide education to all humans.

There are currently ten open seats in two different classes provided by WWC Inside Out: Care Farming taught by Sarah Himmelheber and Introduction to Psychology taught by Cristina Reitz-Krueger.

Both classes are four credits and complete a student’s required PEG Two.

Introduction to Psychology seeks to cover the basis of psychology. The class provides a comprehensive overview of the field of psychology such as research methods, origins of psychology and psychotherapy. The class will take place during term one and will meet every Friday at one p.m.

Care Farming will assess social care farming, a type of farming used for therapeutic purposes with hands-on experience and discuss the groups in which care farming’s usefulness would benefit the community. This class will meet every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m, this is an all-semester course.

Classes are held inside correctional facilities. Students must observe all of the facility’s practices and ordinances in order to gain entry and participate in the course. All students are required to wear established Inside Out t-shirts, given to students during orientation.

This fall semester is the first semester where the Inside students were given WWC shirts as well, donated by the WWC athletics program. This is exciting news as this is the first time Inside students were given WWC gear.

There are a few requirements and stages one must adhere to in order to be accepted to WWC spring Inside Out courses. All students must follow the Western Correctional Center for Women rules and WWC rules and regulations.

Students must be 19 by Jan. 17, 2024, and be in good standing with the college.

Furthermore, students must complete an application and engage in a 20-minute interview. The application as well as more information about rules and regulations can be found here

Inside Out is a rare and thrilling opportunity for WWC students and the chance to participate is here. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Students interested in any of the Inside Out courses should apply as early as possible.
