Driving on Warren Wilson Road

Harley Woods | March 16, 2023

Three major accidents have occurred along Warren Wilson Rd since the winter began. Two have resulted in broken fencing and one resulted in a full traffic stop in both directions.

One of the accidents was caused by nothing more than tires falling onto the low shoulder on Warren Wilson Rd, leading the car to roll several times. The Warren Wilson College (WWC) student who drove the vehicle sustained no injuries, though the car was totaled.

Another accident occurred overnight in February, where a vehicle crashed into the fencing at the Baptist church near the Bee Tree Community. Though the vehicle was not identified, the church bore the responsibility of repairing the fence.

Hit and runs are a misdemeanor or felony in N.C. depending on the circumstances

On Feb. 28, an accident occurred near the red barn on Warren Wilson Rd. Traffic was stopped in both directions as one car had run into the high shoulder, and another was stopped in the opposite lane. From a distance, there appeared to be no severe injury, though emergency vehicles did respond.

An article about car crash statistics from 2020 states that: β€œin 45% of fatal crashes, the drivers of passenger vehicles were engaged in at least one of the following risky behaviors: speeding, alcohol impairment, or not wearing a seat belt.”

Risky behaviors can also include operating technology while behind the wheel, as bluetooth devices have become increasingly common in newer models of cars. Texting while driving is also increasingly common.

The CDC also states that the U.S. has the highest death rate in crashes compared to other countries.

Always practice safe driving and do not make a habit of distracted driving. Traffic laws and regulations advise everyone to wait by the accident until police officers arrive. Anyone can access accident reports at this website
