Warren Wilson Theatre Back in Action: “Appropriate”
Sierra Davis | November 11, 2021
After a several month hiatus, the Warren Wilson College (WWC) Theatre is finally ready to unveil their latest production: “Appropriate” by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. With death, family dynamics and a poignant past all rolled into one on-stage production, anyone and everyone is encouraged to attend.
“While cleaning the plantation homestead of their late father, the Lafayette family is haunted by the ghosts of their past,” wrote the Theatre Crew. “Maintaining peace and selling the property is much harder when new arrivals and old memories seem to appear from thin air. The siblings must confront both their resentment towards each other and the disturbing artifacts found among their father’s things.”
However, this play has caused controversy on the Warren Wilson campus already. Candace Taylor, professor and chair of the theatre department, addressed this strife in a perspective piece for The Echo previously.
“‘Appropriate’ is intended to make you uncomfortable,” wrote Taylor. “And was chosen for that reason — to cause understanding and empathy, and very possibly, change.”
Taylor then went on to write that “Appropriate” is a fictional story intended for those who can watch with an open mind, can tolerate being criticized, and are thoughtful in seeking truth and equity — not for those who are racist or performative in their allyship.
“Appropriate” will be showing in Kittredge for three days in November. On Nov. 12 and 13, play-appreciators and aficionados can view the show at 7:30pm, while the Nov. 14 showing offers an earlier time of 2:30pm. All shows are open to the public, and WWC affiliates with valid I.D. cards get in for free. Tickets can be bought and reserved here.
